August 2024 Sightings

August 31st

Lowestoft: three Long-tailed Skuas south off Ness Point (two at 09:58 and one at 11:50) and two CORY'S SHEARWATER north (from North Beach at 10:07 and from Ness Point at 10:40). A Great Skua south off Ness Point (at 11:50) and a Sooty Shearwater north (at 17:00).

Covehithe: a close Sooty Shearwater north (at 16:39).

Southwold: two CORY'S SHEARWATERS (one south at 08:10, one north at 09:18). A WHITE-BILLED DIVER north (at 10:30) plus a Sooty Shearwater north (at 11:35).

Hen Reedbeds: an Osprey again on the Blyth.

Minsmere: a CORY'S SHEARWATER south (at 08:20), three Long-tailed Skuas (one south at 07:20, two south at 08:30) and 11 Arctic Skuas, including a flock of eight south (at 08:50). 

Sizewell: two Long-tailed Skuas south (at 08:32) and eight Arctic Skuas south (at 08:50).

Thorpeness: three Long-tailed Skuas (one south at 07:29, two south at 08:22) and eight Arctic Skuas south (at 08:55). A Sooty Shearwater north (at 10:13).

North Warren: two Long-tailed Skuas south (at 08:44).

Hazlewood Marsh: an Osprey present and two Spoonbills.

Bawdsey: a CORY'S SHEARWATER off East Lane (at 10:30).

Felixstowe: a juvenile Tree Sparrow on feeders at Suffolk Sands holiday park plus a Sooty Shearwater south.

 

August 30th

Minsmere: a Curlew Sandpiper still on East Scrape, four Black Terns offshore and Little Gull on South Scrape.

Hazlewood Marsh: four Spoonbills.

Orford: four Spoonbills flew south plus a Whinchat by the sewage works.

Felixstowe: a juvenile Tree Sparrow on feeders at Suffolk Sands holiday park.

Wetherden: a Goshawk in a kettle with Buzzards.

​August 29th

Lowestoft: a Black Tern off Link's Hill and five Whinchats on the Denes.

Pakefield: two Black Terns off CEFAS.

Kessingland: a Pied Flycatcher by the sewage works fishing lakes.

Benacre: five Whinchats around the sluice.

Minsmere: a Curlew Sandpiper on East Scrape, two Cattle Egrets flew towards Island Mere, four Spoonbills and two Pied Flycatchers in the Sluice bushes.

Thorpeness: 11 Little Gulls offshore then flew inland.

Boyton Marsh: an Osprey from Burrow Hill, Curlew Sandpiper on the left-hand flash and Whinchat.

Hollesley: two Whinchats along the river wall.

Shingle Street: at least three Whinchats around.

Bawdsey: a Pied Flycatcher at East Lane.

 

August 28th

Kessingland: a Pied Flycatcher along Marsh Lane.

Beccles: a Pied Flycatcher in a garden in the town.

Southwold: two Black Terns south offshore.

Blythburgh: an Osprey and four Spoonbills viewed from the A12 bridge.

Wenhaston: a Raven over Blackheath.

Minsmere: two Cattle Egret from South Hide and seven Garganey on the scrape.

Eastbridge: six Whinchats.

Boyton Marsh: the Curlew Sandpiper still present.

Felixstowe: a Whinchat behind the Ferry Inn.

Landguard: a Pied Flycatcher ringed at LBO plus a Spotted Flycatcher on the Butts.

Trimley: a Cattle Egret at Loompit Lake.

Shelley: an Osprey and a Wood Sandpiper at Gifford's Flash.

 

August 27th

North Warren: two Whinchat on the shingle ridge.

Aldeburgh Marsh: two Whinchats present.

Hazlewood Marsh: a Curlew Sandpiper and three Spoonbills.

Havergate Island: a Merlin flew south.

Boyton Marsh: the Curlew Sandpiper still present, an Osprey along Butley River plus two Whinchats.

Shingle Street: at least three Whinchats around.

Bawdsey: two Whinchats at East Lane north towards the first Martello Tower.

 

August 26th

Southwold: two Cattle Egrets, including a juvenile, flew north over the town.

Reydon: five Whinchats around St. Felix marshes.

Hen Reedbeds: an Osprey on the Blyth plus 13 Spoonbills.

Minsmere: a Garganey on East Scrape plus 23 Little Gulls.

Aldeburgh Marsh: eight Whinchats around.

Hazlewood Marsh: a Curlew Sandpiper.

Havergate Island: three Curlew Sandpipers.

Boyton Marsh: the Curlew Sandpiper still present on the original flashes, an Osprey along Butley River plus a Whinchat.

Shingle Street: an Osprey drifted towards the coast then headed north-east and four Whinchats.

Bury St Edmunds: an Osprey flew south.

Shelley: an Osprey at Gifford's Flash.

 

August 25th

Hen Reedbeds: an Osprey on a post on the Blyth plus 11 Spoonbills.

Minsmere: a Little Stint on East Scrape and a day-roosting Nightjar showed well by the visitor centre.

Eastbridge: two Cattle Egrets 200 yards west of the bridge viewed from the footpath.

Hazlewood Marsh: and adult and juvenile Curlew Sandpiper, 10 Spoonbill plus an Osprey over the Alde towards Iken.

Boyton Marsh: the Curlew Sandpiper still present plus a Whinchat and an Osprey along Butley River by the oyster beds.

Bawdsey: an Osprey south over East Lane.

Felixstowe: the Osprey from East Lane noted south offshore past the promenade.

 

August 24th

Minsmere: a Wood Sandpiper on the scrape.

Boyton Marsh: the Curlew Sandpiper still present.

Shingle Street: a Pied Flycatcher from the path at the allotments.

Nayland: two Ravens flew WNW over The Woodyard..

 

August 23rd

Lowestoft: three Sooty Shearwaters north off Ness Point.

Walberswick: a Caspian Gull.

Minsmere: a female Garganey on South Scrape and a Spoonbill on East Scrape.

Boyton Marsh: a Curlew Sandpiper and 11 Cattle Egrets plus an Osprey.

Shingle Street: two Pied Flycatcher still present.

Foxhall: an Osprey south over the A12 Foxhall roundabout.

Pipps Ford: an Osprey circling over before heading down the Gipping valley towards Great Blakenham.

August 22nd

Minsmere: two Garganey on the scrape and three Little Gulls.

Thorpeness: 19 Little Gulls (16S, 3N) offshore.

Snape: an unconfirmed report of CORNCRAKE along the river wall, 150m from the Maltings.

 

August 21st

North Warren: two Whinchat on South Marsh from the Haven viewing platform.

Shingle Street: two Whinchat opposite the tennis courts and a Pied Flycatcher in the Poplars by the allotment.

Ipswich: both a Pied Flycatcher and Spotted Flycatcher in Chantry Park.

 

August 20th

Gorleston: a probable ELEONORA'S FALCON flew north over Cliff Hill.

Walberswick: a juvenile Caspian Gull.

Minsmere: a SABINE'S GULL flew south offshore plus seven Spoonbills and three Little Gulls.

Shingle Street: a Whinchat opposite the tennis courts and a Pied Flycatcher in the Poplars by the allotment.

Great Livermere: two Caspian Gulls and four Yellow-legged Gulls.

 

August 19th

Lowestoft: three Black Redstarts at Ness Point wind turbine.

North Warren: Whinchat on South Marsh.

Shingle Street: a Whinchat opposite the tennis courts.

Landguard: a Whinchat and a Black Redstart at LBO.

Shelley: Wood Sandpiper on Gifford's Flash.​

August 18th

Kessingland: two Pied Flycatchers in the copse next to Heathlands caravan park plus three Spotted Flycatchers.

Minsmere: Garganey and five Spoonbills.

Westleton: a Pied Flycatcher on the heath.

Shingle Street: four Pied Flycatchers in poplars by the allotment.

Bawdsey: three Pied Flycatchers at East Lane along the concrete track.

Landguard: a Whinchat ringed at LBO.

Shelley: an Osprey at Gifford's Flash.

Carlton Marsh: a ringed Spoonbill on Share Marsh and two Garganey on Peto's Marsh.

Minsmere: Curlew SandpiperLittle Stint, Garganey and Spoonbill on East Scrape.

Hazlewood Marsh: two Curlew Sandpipers.

Landguard: a Pied Flycatcher at LBO.

Minsmere: Curlew Sandpiper, two Little Stints, four Garganey and 21 Little Gulls

Thorpeness: possible ROSS'S GULL offshore.

Shotley: two Cattle Egrets in a cattle field north of the marina.

Minsmere: Curlew Sandpiper and Little Stint on East Scrape

North Warren: four Spoonbills on South Marsh.

Hazlewood Marsh: two Curlew Sandpipers.

 

August 14th

Minsmere: five Curlew Sandpipers on East Scrape plus a Little Stint and Garganey.

North Warren: a Glossy Ibis on South Marsh.

Hazlewood Marsh: a single Curlew Sandpiper.

Boyton Marsh: two Wood Sandpipers on the first flash.

 

August 13th

Minsmere: a Little Stint on West Scrape.

Aldeburgh Marsh: a Curlew Sandpiper.

Orford: three Pied Flycatchers at Orford Quay meadow.

Boyton Marsh: two Wood Sandpipers on the first flash.

Shingle Street: two Pied Flycatchers in Poplars by the allotments.

Upper Hollesley Common: a Pied Flycatcher present.

 

August 12th

Lowestoft: an adult SABINE'S GULL south past North Beach.

Minsmere: a juvenile RED-NECKED PHALAROPE on South Scrape.

Thorpeness: a Long-tailed Skua south, 18 (1S, 17N) Sooty Shearwaters, a Manx Shearwater and two Arctic Skuas early morning.

North Warren: a Glossy Ibis flew in and landed on South Marsh.

Boyton Marsh: a Pied Flycatcher at Banters Barn.

Landguard: a Pied Flycatcher at LBO.

 

August 11th

Minsmere: a juvenile limosa Black-tailed Godwit, three Little Ringed Plovers and 17 Little Gulls on South Scrape and three Spoonbills on East Scrape. An Arctic Skua flew north.

Aldeburgh Marsh: a Whinchat.

Boyton Marsh: a PECTORAL SANDPIPER reported then flew towards Hollesley Marsh.

Long Melford: a Glossy Ibis seen circling high over fields north of the village before flying west towards Stanstead.

 

August 10th

Carlton Marsh: Wood Sandpiper, two Garganey and two Spoonbills.

Minsmere: four juvenile limosa Black-tailed Godwits, four Garganey and 21 Little Gulls present.

Hazlewood Marsh: three adult Curlew Sandpipers and 14 Spoonbills.

Woodbridge: an Osprey heading down river near Sun Wharf.

 

August 9th

Minsmere: a HONEY-BUZZARD south over the South Levels then beyond Sizewell. On the Scrape a juvenile limosa Black-tailed Godwit and 14 Little Gulls present.

North Warren: a Cattle Egret on South Marsh.

Hazlewood Marsh: three adult Curlew Sandpipers and 20 Spoonbills.

 

August 8th

Carlton Marsh: three Wood Sandpipers still and a Spoonbill on Peto's Marsh.

Minsmere: HONEY-BUZZARD high over the South Levels then headed out to sea.

August 7th

Carlton Marsh: three Wood Sandpipers viewed from the river bank on Share Marsh.

Hazlewood Marsh: two Curlew Sandpipers and 15 Spoonbills.

 

August 6th

Minsmere: four Garganey on South Scrape and a Curlew Sandpiper on East Scrape.

Beyton: three Ravens.

August 5th

Minsmere: Curlew Sandpiper on East Scrape.

North Warren: a Glossy Ibis still on South Marsh.

Hazlewood Marsh: a Curlew Sandpiper, 17 Spoonbills and an Osprey.

Landguard: the Pied Flycatcher still at LBO.

 

August 4th

Minsmere: two Garganey, four juvenile limosa Black-tailed Godwit, a Curlew Sandpiper, 15 Little Gulls and four Spoonbills. 

North Warren: a Glossy Ibis on South Marsh.

Aldeburgh: a Spoonbill flew south and a juvenile Caspian Gull on the beach.

Aldeburgh Marsh: a Wood Sandpiper briefly.

Hazlewood Marsh: four Curlew Sandpipers, 14 Spoonbills and a juvenile Caspian Gull.

August 3rd

Kessingland: a MARSH WARBLER trapped and ringed at the sewage works.

Minsmere: two Little Stints, three juvenile limosa Black-tailed Godwit, eight Little Ringed Plovers, six Little Gulls and four Spoonbills. 

Landguard: a Pied Flycatcher still at LBO plus an Arctic Skua of the Point.

Trimley Marsh: a Glossy Ibis on the winter flood.

 

August 2nd

Southwold: Pied Flycatcher at both the sewage works and the cemetery.

Bulcamp Marsh: three adult Curlew Sandpipers on the Blyth Estuary.

Minsmere: an adult Little Stint, a juvenile limosa Black-tailed Godwit, seven Little Gulls and three Spoonbills. 

Hazlewood Marsh: three Curlew Sandpipers and 14 Spoonbills.

Landguard: a Pied Flycatcher at LBO.

 

August 1st

Carlton Marsh: Garganey on a pool just before Turnpike Hide.

Minsmere: Glossy Ibis on West Scrape and two Arctic Skuas north.
